FROM Season 4 Episode 5 & 6 Recap and Review

From Season 4 Episode 5, “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been,” pushes the series deeper into psychological horror and finally starts connecting some of the town’s mysteries together.

The biggest storyline follows Jade, whose mushroom-induced visions turn into a terrifying revelation about reincarnation and the town’s repeating cycles. During his hallucinations, Jade encounters younger versions of himself, past identities connected to the town, and visions suggesting he and Tabitha have lived through this nightmare multiple times before.

The episode strongly implies the town traps people in recurring loops where the same suffering repeats across generations

Meanwhile, Tabitha and Donna discover giant doll-like figures connected to an old lake legend. What initially looks like harmless folklore turns deadly when the dolls attack the cabin at night, brutally killing and injuring members of the group. Tabitha suddenly remembers the creatures from childhood memories and realizes the monsters can actually be harmed using the spiked talismans around the settlement.

The episode also focuses heavily on emotional collapse:

  • Henry breaks down after learning the truth about the Man in Yellow killing Miranda.
  • Mari experiences terrifying visions suggesting the dead never truly escape the town.
  • Boyd and Jade uncover a hidden tunnel leading toward the sacrificial chamber tied to the children and the origin of the curse.

Fans widely considered Episode 5 one of the strongest episodes of the season because it finally rewards long-running mysteries while making the horror feel more cosmic and existential rather than just “monsters at night.” The atmosphere becomes increasingly hopeless: the town no longer feels like a trap people can escape physically — it feels like an ancient system designed to recycle suffering forever.

Episode 6

From Season 4 Episode 6, “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter,” shifts the story from pure survival horror into something much more psychological and desperate.

The episode mainly revolves around the growing conflict between Boyd and Jade after Jade’s mushroom-induced visions from Episode 5. Jade becomes convinced that his hallucinations revealed real information about hidden tunnels and doors connected to the town’s origin, while Boyd initially believes Jade is losing his mind under the pressure.

At the same time, the town itself feels increasingly unstable:

  • Victor reaches an emotional breaking point and contemplates suicide while reliving traumatic memories.
  • Marielle experiences disturbing visions involving chained prisoners and dead residents.
  • Donna nearly dies during a violent supernatural incident, which pushes Boyd into complete desperation.

The biggest reveal comes near the ending. After spending most of the episode doubting Jade, Boyd finally acts on Jade’s vision and literally smashes through a hidden wall inside Colony House. Behind it, they uncover a concealed entrance connected to the underground tunnel system that may lead directly toward the origin of the creatures and the town’s curse.

Fans reacted strongly to the episode because it balanced emotional collapse with actual progression in the mystery. Instead of only adding new questions, Episode 6 finally gives the feeling that the characters are physically approaching the truth behind the town — even if that truth may be far worse than the monsters themselves.
