Fallout 4 Explained: Special Delivery Quest

A Deep Dive Into Story, Lore, Secrets, and a Full Walkthrough

Fallout 4 is packed with weird quests, but few feel as mysterious and old world sci-fi as the Cabot family storyline. Special Delivery is the gateway into one of the Commonwealth’s strangest secrets. You start by thinking you are running a normal courier gig. A scientist wants a package delivered. Raiders want to steal it. Nothing unusual. Then you step into Cabot House and everything flips upside down. There is immortality serum. Ancient alien like artifacts buried under the old world. A father trapped for centuries. And a truth that even the Institute would envy.

This quest is the opening chapter that sets the tone for the madness that follows.

A Secret Too Big for the Commonwealth

You begin near Bunker Hill where you meet Edward Deegan. He looks like someone who has been around too long to care and he is weirdly formal for a mercenary. He asks you to do a job for his employer Jack Cabot. It sounds simple. Deliver a package to Parsons State Insane Asylum.

When you first meet Jack, he does not act like the typical Fallout scientist. He is obsessed with security. He knows exactly what is inside the package and he has a reason to fear it falling into the wrong hands. There is a constant tension in his voice like someone who has been hiding a monster for too long.

As the quest unfolds you discover Jack is part of the Cabot family. A group of highly intelligent but socially distant immortals. They owe their unnatural lifespan to something Jack found in the Middle East: an artifact buried deep under a forgotten ruin. Something older than human civilization. Something that changes people at the biological level.

This is not just a fancy stimulant. It is not a Vault Tec experiment. It is an artifact that predates everything.

The Artifact, Parsons, and the Immortal Family

The Cabots owe everything to the artifact Jack discovered in Arabia. It releases an unknown energy that regenerates cells and extends life far beyond the normal human span. The serum Jack synthesizes from it is the only thing keeping the Cabot family from falling apart. But the original power source is locked inside the asylum.

And that is where Jack’s father, Lorenzo Cabot, has been imprisoned for centuries.

The lore implication is wild. The artifact might not be human. It could be alien. It could be pre human civilization. Fallout never gives a clean answer but every hint suggests it belongs to something far older and far more advanced. Lorenzo absorbed too much of it and became strong, violent, and mentally unstable. Jack had no choice but to lock him away and siphon the artifact’s energy to keep the family alive.

Jack is brilliant but also desperate. The family is falling apart under the weight of centuries of unnatural life. They rely on the artifact like an addiction. And the Raiders threatening Parsons are on the verge of exposing everything.

Secrets Most Players Miss

1. The Cabots are at least 400 years old
Their conversations hint at multiple centuries of life. They remember pre war events firsthand.

2. The artifact may be alien
Clues from terminals and Jack’s comments hint the ruin found in Arabia was not human in origin. It has advanced geometry, unusual symbols, and unexplained energy fields.

3. Lorenzo is far more powerful than Jack admits
He can use telekinesis through the artifact. This becomes obvious later but Special Delivery lays the groundwork.

4. Parsons State Insane Asylum was built specifically to detain him
The entire facility is a cover to hide Lorenzo’s cell.

Walkthrough: From Bunker Hill to Cabot House

1. Meet Edward Deegan

You will usually find him in bars around Bunker Hill or in Goodneighbor. Talk to him and he offers you a courier job.

2. Travel to Cabot House

The place is heavily locked down. Do not try to break in early. Meeting Jack opens the door properly. The interior feels pre war but preserved in a creepy, almost sterile way. You meet the entire Cabot family and feel immediately that something is off.

3. Accept Jack’s Delivery Job

He sends you to Parsons State Insane Asylum to deliver a package. Raiders have already hit the convoy and are trying to break into the asylum.

4. Clear the Raiders Outside Parsons

They are well armed and more organized than the typical Raider gang which hints someone is leading them. You will see signs they tried to breach the facility multiple times.

5. Enter the Asylum With Jack

Inside, Raiders have already infiltrated. The hallways are twisted, full of cells that do not match normal mental health facilities. The deeper you go, the stranger the architecture becomes. Jack becomes increasingly nervous as you approach the lowest level.

6. Discover the Artifact Chamber

This is where the quest drops its first major reveal. The tech. The architecture. The containment field. None of it looks like anything from the Fallout world. You can see the artifact powering Lorenzo’s restraints even though Jack does not fully explain it yet.

This is your first glimpse into the real heart of the Cabot mystery.

7. Finish the Delivery

After clearing the Raiders and inspecting the damage, you complete the quest and Jack promises more work. This leads into the next quest where the true conflict with Lorenzo begins.
