That scene told me more about this war than another dragon battle probably could.

Ormund speaks about Meria Martell, the woman who resisted Aegon the Conqueror, while Daeron carefully asks whether she should be remembered as a hero or a villain. It sounds like an innocent historical question, but Daeron immediately realizes that he has walked into dangerous territory. He is not really asking about Meria. He is testing whether he is allowed to possess a thought that Ormund did not place inside him.

That is what makes their relationship so uncomfortable. Daeron is a prince, a dragonrider and potentially one of the most important political figures in Westeros, yet whenever he sits opposite Ormund, he seems like a child waiting to discover whether he has given the correct answer.

Ormund has not simply educated him. He has built an entire emotional system around him.

Approval is the reward. Humiliation is the punishment. Violence is the lesson. Daeron has been taught that earning Ormund’s affection requires suppressing the parts of himself that Ormund considers weak, foreign or dangerously Targaryen. The result is a young man who fears his guardian, admires him and desperately wants to make him proud—all at the same time.

That is not ordinary loyalty. It is dependency.

What makes Ormund fascinating is that I do not think he views himself as a conventional abuser. He appears to genuinely believe that Daeron was entrusted to him so that he could transform the boy into something greater. In Ormund’s mind, cruelty is discipline, manipulation is guidance and forced violence is preparation for kingship.

He can therefore hurt Daeron while believing that he loves him.

That contradiction is far more unsettling than a villain who simply wants power. Ormund wants power, but he also wants authorship. He wants to look at Daeron and see his own creation sitting on the Iron Throne.

Episode 5 makes this explicit through the cyvasse match. Ormund delivers another lecture about history and strategy, yet Daeron quietly defeats him by moving the dragon piece. On the surface, it is a small victory. Underneath it, the scene exposes the flaw in Ormund’s entire project.

He wants Daeron’s Targaryen power without allowing Daeron to become his own person.

He despises the dragon while planning to use it.

He rejects Daeron’s blood while building a political campaign around it.

He wants an obedient Hightower instrument, but the very qualities that make Daeron valuable—his intelligence, moral curiosity and connection to Tessarion—are qualities Ormund may never be able to control completely.

The title “Unbowed and Unbent” therefore feels less like a description of a military faction and more like a question hanging over Daeron. Has Ormund already broken him, or is there still a part of Daeron that refuses to bend?

The cyvasse victory suggests that something remains.

Daeron understands more than Ormund realizes. He notices the contradictions. He knows when a question has become dangerous. He can outperform his mentor without openly challenging him. That does not mean he is ready to rebel, but it means Ormund’s control is not absolute.

I think this is why their storyline has become one of the strongest parts of Season 3. The series is no longer presenting Daeron as another distant Targaryen prince arriving with a dragon to influence the war. It is presenting him as a psychologically contested territory.

Every faction will eventually want something from him. Alicent will see her missing son. The Greens will see a military asset. Ormund sees a king he can manufacture. The realm will see another claimant riding a blue dragon.

The real question is whether Daeron will ever be allowed to see himself.

And when he finally does, I suspect Ormund Hightower may discover that raising a dragon is not the same thing as controlling one.
