Fallout 4 Explained: Vault 95
What Is Vault 95?
Vault 95 sits deep in the southern Commonwealth, hidden off the main roads and surrounded by rocky terrain. At first glance, it looks like yet another sealed bunker. But inside lies one of Fallout 4’s most tragic and brutal Vault-Tec experiments. Vault 95 was designed not to test combat, genetics, or isolation but recovery. Its initial purpose:
- House a group of chem addicts
- Treat them through structure, therapy, and community
- Create a stable, clean-living environment
For five long years, the vault thrived. No chems. No relapse. Just recovery and routine. Then Vault-Tec revealed its true hand.
The Secret Experiment
The vault contained a sealed wing locked behind massive blast doors. Inside that wing:
a massive hidden stockpile of chems. When the timer hit five years, a group of “security personnel” embedded inside as fake residents unlocked the stash. They released Jet, Med-X, Psycho, everything addicts had once struggled to leave behind.
The goal: observe the collapse.
How fast would society unravel when those in recovery are suddenly hit with unlimited access to their addiction triggers?
The answer?
Instantly.
The logs found throughout show heartbreak: relapse, violence, desperation, confusion, betrayal. The vault fell apart from the inside out. It’s one of the coldest Vault-Tec experiments ever recorded.
Vault 95 After the Fall
When the Sole Survivor reaches the vault, it’s decades after the tragedy. The original residents are dead. The community that once tried to heal is long gone. But someone else has moved in:
The Gunners. They’ve turned Vault 95 into:
- A fortified outpost
- A training ground
- A weapons storage hub
- A “clean” base compared to their usual camps
The irony? They conquered a vault destroyed by addiction, while many Gunners themselves rely on chems to enhance combat.
Why Vault 95 Matters
Vault 95 ties heavily into:
- Cait’s companion quest (“Benign Intervention”)
- Gunner operations in the south Commonwealth
- Vault-Tec’s psychological manipulation experiments
- The theme of addiction and recovery in Fallout 4
For Cait, Vault 95 represents a chance at actual healing once the Gunners are cleared out.
For the player, it’s a look at how Vault-Tec weaponized suffering.
Full Walkthrough
The vault is hidden behind a slope to the northwest ridge.
You’ll find:
- Gunner patrols outside
- One machinegun turret
- A bunker-style entryway
Take out the exterior forces; they won’t respawn immediately.
Main Door & Entry Hall
Open the blast door and step inside. The first chamber contains:
- Gunners behind sandbags
- A narrow hallway perfect for grenades
- A turret positioned at the far end
Tip: Pick enemies from the back first; Gunners here have strong rifles.
Residential Wing
This is where the former residents lived.
You’ll see:
- Therapy rooms
- Cafeteria
- Community spaces
- Bodies and notes that detail the collapse
Combat notes:
- Expect ambushes from side rooms
- Gunners often flank from dormitories
- Mines sometimes appear near staircases in Survival mode
Medical & Classroom Level
This floor has:
- First-aid boxes
- A classroom turned into a Gunner briefing area
- A medical bay now used as an armory
Enemies:
- Gunner Lieutenants
- Grenadiers hidden behind medical equipment
Tip: Use corners as natural cover; the Gunners love throwing explosives here.
Lower Wing: The Sealed Vault-Tec Stash
This is the heart of the tragedy.
A sealed steel door leads to:
- The massive chem stockpile
- The logs revealing the infiltrators
- Evidence of the relapse trigger event
This is also where the Gunners store their heavy loot.
Enemies:
- Gunner Commander
- Heavy weapons specialists
- Two turrets guarding the stash
This is the toughest fight in the vault, so prepare for close-quarters chaos.
Final Chamber: Gunner Command Override
At the far end sits the Gunner leader of Vault 95.
He uses:
- A high-level rifle
- Heavy armor
- Near-constant suppression fire
Defeat him and the vault becomes fully accessible
Loot Highlights
Vault 95 is one of the best mid-game loot vaults:
- Combat rifles
- Tons of chems
- High-tier armor
- Ammo crates
- Med supplies
- Fusion cores (rare but possible)
- Unique logs for lore collectors
If you bring Cait, clearing the vault unlocks her entire personal redemption arc.
